Guide Valentine's Day: the anti-selection!

Vignette_st-valentin

We won't be talking about little hearts, rose petals or Cupid's arrow. It's cute, delicate, appropriate for February 14th, Valentine's Day. But it won't solve the problem of the other 364 days when you have to wear your watch in all circumstances!

What is the charm of Valentine's Day? It is a day like no other! In their own way, everyone displays a lot of ingenuity to put themselves on stage, with things that are as unique as they are ephemeral: a bouquet of flowers (which will fade), a glass of champagne (which will be sipped in a few minutes), a meal for a dinner (which will not be repeated the next day), an exceptional outfit (which will certainly not be worn to the office the next day).

And the watch? A beautiful gift but which does not escape the rule. Offering Cupid or pink dials is lovely, but perhaps not very useful for the next 364 days when your loved one will be in a meeting, travelling or trekking. What if we were to think beautiful, intimate, personal...but wearable on a daily basis?

The most gender fluid

Share your love...and your watch? The idea is increasingly in vogue. Thanks to vintage fashion, diameters are getting smaller, complications too. The ideal is to wear a piece that will not exceed 40 mm. Each couple is unique, so you might as well choose a watch that you won't find on every wrist. Choose a niche brand, a model that is not very popular but new - not second-hand for Valentine's Day because the watch will have to build its own history at the same time as the couple.

The ideal piece: Ulysse Nardin Classico. Very trendy with its blue dial, it does not forget the centuries-old codes of fine watchmaking thanks to a magnificent guillochage work. Ulysse Nardin remains a niche manufacture reserved for already well-informed amateurs. At less than 10'000 CHF, it is probably the most interesting manufacture movement on the market.

Off-road couple?

Some couples are homebound, others just love discovery and exploration. Forget leather straps and complications, opt for a robust steel watch on a NATO strap, once favored for NATO operations. One particular piece stands out: the Bell & Ross Vintage Military Green. Discreet (41 mm), adventurous, it will look just as good with jeans and a shirt as it will on a hike. Hour, minute, second, date, perfectly unisex, it will be the trusted companion for your couple's future explorations!

Let's be serious!

The perfect gift is one that is given on Valentine's Day...but still keeps in mind the next 364 days! Office couple? You need a watch that imposes a certain presence, a social status. You need to display your perfect mastery of the codes of traditional watchmaking: a prestigious manufacture, an iconic brand, a timeless model, meticulous aesthetic codes (Roman numerals, guilloché, ‘hollow-tip’ hands, leather strap), obvious complications but without anything ostentatious so as not to impose your ego on your colleagues. This perfect piece exists: the Cartier Rotonde Power Reserve. Unusual, perfectly mastered, it can be worn at 20 or 60 with the same elegance. A must-have.

A woman, a man, each one a dial

Why not a watch with two faces, one for him, the other for her? The concept seems ideal and there is only one (beautiful) watch capable of fulfilling this unlikely specification: the Reverso by Jaeger-LeCoultre. With its two faces, the piece offers the possibility of a dial for each of the two lovers, with the possibility of choosing to display either one's own or that of the loved one to remember them permanently. Two-in-one, the best incarnation of a fusional couple!

Don't hesitate to look beyond this selection: there will always be the watch you didn't think of, the last minute surprise, the limited series or the promotion of the day. And if a mechanical watch is offered for life and remains unique, don't forget that there are many occasions to offer it, from birthdays to Christmas, including weddings and births!
